There’s a little-known pub in the village of Sunningwell in Oxfordshire, and I’m here to tell you to go and visit it to try the food menu. The Flowing Well is based just outside Abingdon, to the south of Oxford, and is one of those village pubs that actually makes you feel welcome.
That’s because The Flowing Well is more than a tiny dark room with a sticky bar; it’s a beautifully renovated building with a spacious dining room that’s manages to achieve both a modern and rustic decor.
Decorations aside, the menu is also impressive (there is also an entire gluten-free menu which is something to be celebrated). Being five months pregnant, I could’ve justified “needing” to order most of the things on the menu, but we settled on looking at the burger section for the purposes of this blog.
Saying that, we still compromised on ordering something from the “tapas” section of the menu for starters: the lightly-dusted fried calamari served with chilli jam (£6.00).
This would’ve gone done well with a nice glass of wine, but I settled on my classic lime and soda, whilst Sean chose a Yardbird, an American style IPA to accompany his meal.
The calamari was a great starter to enjoy as we waited for our burgers to be served. I had ordered “The Skinny Bird” as I was in the mood for halloumi, and Sean chose the Smokey Joe. We didn’t have to wait too long, as the service runs like clockwork at The Flowing Well.
Our waiter didn’t even mind when I asked him for some more chilli jam to have alongside my burger, instead of the usual ketchup or mayonnaise requests! It was so GOOD.
My burger might have been served without a bun, but it wasn’t lacking in substance considering the amount of chicken, halloumi and sweet potato fries on the plate. It was cooked to perfection; the chicken was moist and had the flavour of the grill, and the cheese complemented this very well.
It was very easily worth the £13.50 I paid!
Sean didn’t have a bad word to say against his burger either. His did come with a bun, but had regular fries instead (and onion rings!).
He said it was essentially a more sophisticated version of a fast-food burger (in the best way possible) due to the flavour combination. There were two hand-pressed beef patties in the bun, along with BBQ sauce, deli cheese, pickles and some crunchy lettuce.
He didn’t have a problem finishing the burger, but a few fries were neglected in the end – only out of being completely full!
Based on our experience, we’ll definitely be back for more. Next time I’ll try the Atomic Cow burger (patties with jalapeños, chorizo, scotch bonnet sauce, and deli cheese) but I’ll probably still ask for some chilli jam…
